Green roofs are an opportunity to improve building efficiency and aesthetics, both commercially and domestically.
There are three types of roof garden:
- Intensive - generally solutions containing natural soil that will support plant life,
- Extensive - generally contain special sub-soils and require special plants and
- Biodiverse (brown roofs) – maximise biodiversity to provide a habitat for a specific target species. This is usually achieved by dividing the roof into areas containing different local substrates (eg. Gravel in some areas, topsoil in another, crushed concrete & so on) leaving it self-colonise over a period of years.
